equinox :: a returning

March 20, 2019 by melissa reid

I love the lesson the seasons keep teaching me – the constant reminder that even though life moves into dark and apparently dead periods, the flowers always push themselves back up through the ground after the chill, the leaves come back, the birds start singing again, the light returns: the world comes back to life again and again. It is resilient. And we can be too.

It’s been a difficult winter. The hardest one I can ever remember actually, without meaning to sound too dramatic. But, like a little miracle: spring has arrived. I’ve been counting down the days and it’s here (outside my window there’s a single, skinny daffodil bobbing in the wind). Thank God for it. So, hello again. I hope to return to this writing corner a little more frequently these coming weeks. Tell me, what are some things you’re most looking forward to this season?*

(*A few of mine: the first birthday party of a tiny precious person – my heart has grown three sizes for her this year. The feel of (Portuguese) sunshine on my cheeks in May. Going to meet my book-group and it *not* being dark when we say our goodbyes. The sound of lawn-mowers. The moment it becomes warm enough to eat lunch on the back steps again. The taste of strawberries, plumbs, peaches…)

My favourite tree - we always pass it on our daily walk. I think it’s probably a dead tree because it never seems to turn green, but it is full of living things: mostly birds who will swoop in, their small wings purring, and then lan

Poems and notes to the ones I love. The hardest thing is not being able to go and hug them right now. (‘it is a serious thing/just to be alive/on this fresh morning/in this broken world...’ - Mary Oliver)

Morning view (I saw this big flower in a shop window back in my first year of my undergrad. I walked past it and then double backed, hesitated outside the shop, then went inside - the bell jingling* on the door - and bought it. It’s

Things to be grateful for: that this is happening as we move into spring rather than the darkness of winter - it’s easier to find light within, I feel, when there’s also light without

After saying goodbye to work colleagues the day before - not being able to hug each other so just smiling, rather sadly, and offering ‘take cares’ - this was Day 1 of staying home. I haven’t left the village since.
